We have never been to Point Beach State Forest and really didn’t know what to expect. Months ago when we decided to look for camping during Memorial Day weekend, this was the only opening we could find. This park turned out to be the perfect spot on Memorial Day weekend. The sites were wooded, private, and spacious. We had electric and water near our site. There were plenty of trees to hang our hammocks and enjoy a relaxing stay. Probably my favorite part of the weekend, was doing our part in honoring what this weekend truly means. The rocks on Lake Michigan were beautiful in color and many were in the colors of red, white, and blue. Travis and I spend an afternoon creating an American Flag rock art tribute to all of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for us. My 13 year old son, was so proud of his work. We took many walks down to the beach to see if the flag still was intact. We took pictures at sunset and even set our alarms for 4:45 am for sunrise! Someone added USA near it too. Hope you enjoy the pictures! Hiking and Ticks...yuck!We hiked 5 miles of the Ice Age Trail out of the 9 miles that runs through the park. We loved walking along the beach, you can walk for miles! The Rawley Point Lighthouse was neat to see, but you can't get too close to it. We also hiked the nature trail and learned about ridges and swales. A swale is a geological formation that was formed when the tides were much higher and it created shallow channels that run parallel to the lake. The swales are filled with stagnant water, which I would guess causes a horrible mosquito season! Fortunately for us, there were no mosquitoes yet! However, the ticks were definitely out, yuck!
So we found out the hard way that this was a bad time of the year for ticks. We found a few on us and the dog. Poor Willow had to sleep by herself this weekend. She loves sleeping on Mia’s bed when camping, but we didn’t want her to share ticks with Mia. Both kids ended up having a tick embedded on them within hours of doing a tick check. Thankfully we checked multiple times a day. Our trick at getting the tick out completely is to drown it in Dawn’s dish soap. This is a trick my parents taught me and has not failed us yet. It seems to make the tick back out and can be easily removed. Despite the ticks, we really enjoyed our stay at Point Beach State Forest. We would definitely come back to this beautiful park!
